What Does Gold Filled Mean?

Gold filled jewellery refers to pieces made by permanently bonding a thick layer of gold alloy onto a base metal. In simple terms, what is gold filled? It’s jewellery that looks and feels like solid gold because of its durable gold layer, but it costs much less. By U.S. standards the gold layer must be at least 5% of the item’s weight, ensuring a substantial coating. This heavy gold layer means gold-filled items look like high-karat gold and can last decades, while also being hypoallergenic.

Key Takeaways

  • Thick Gold Layer: Gold-filled jewellery has a solid gold layer bonded to another metal, not just a thin plated coating.
  • Gold Content: It contains at least 5% gold by weight (usually stamped like “1/20 14K GF”), far more than regular gold plating.
  • Durability: Gold-filled pieces look like real gold and often last 10–30 years under normal wear.
  • Tarnish Resistance: The thick gold layer resists tarnishing better than plated jewellery (gold itself doesn’t tarnish).
  • Gold Filled vs Plated/Vermeil: Gold-filled has much more gold and is more durable than gold-plated items; it uses a different base metal than vermeil (brass vs. silver).
  • Cost: Since it contains only a fraction of real gold, its value is just a fraction of solid gold’s (roughly a few pounds/dollars per gram).

What Does Gold Filled Mean?

Gold filled means a piece of jewellery has a solid layer of gold alloy mechanically bonded to a base metal (often brass). In other words, it’s a composite material with two parts: a core metal and a thick gold “sleeve.” The result is jewellery that has the appearance and durability of solid gold, but at a lower cost. What qualifies an item as gold-filled is the gold content: by regulation, at least 5% of the total weight must be gold. For example, a common marking is “1/20 14K GF,” meaning the 14K gold layer is one-twentieth (5%) of the piece’s weight. Gold-filled items often bear clear hallmarks of their karat and proportion (not just “GF”), ensuring transparency.

Because the gold layer is so thick, gold-filled jewellery wears well. Most high-quality gold-filled pieces maintain the look of high-carat gold, and under normal wear they can last 10–30 years before the gold layer eventually thins. The layer of gold in gold-filled items is 5–10 times thicker than regular gold plating, which is why they don’t scratch or fade as quickly. Gold-filled jewellery is also hypoallergenic (the gold shields any base metal from touching skin) and is popular for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. In summary, gold filled means a generous coating of real gold over metal, certified by weight (e.g. 1/20 14K GF), giving you long-lasting gold jewellery.

Can Gold Filled Tarnish?

Gold-filled jewellery generally does not tarnish easily, thanks to its thick gold layer. Pure gold is non-reactive, so it won’t oxidise or tarnish. In a gold-filled piece, the substantial gold coating protects the underlying metal. By contrast, cheaply gold-plated silver or copper often tarnishes as the base metal corrodes. Gold-filled items resist this because there is much more gold to shield the core.

That said, heavy wear or harsh chemicals can eventually wear through any gold layer. If the gold layer does thin significantly, the base metal (often brass or copper) could darken or discolour. But under normal use, gold-filled pieces keep their colour and shine for years.

How To Clean Gold Filled Jewellery

To keep gold-filled jewellery looking new, use gentle cleaning:

  • Prepare mild soap solution: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm (not hot) water.
  • Soak briefly: Let the gold-filled piece soak for a few minutes to loosen dirt (optional step).
  • Gently scrub: Use a soft toothbrush or cloth to lightly scrub away any buildup, especially in crevices.
  • Rinse well: Rinse the jewellery in clean water to remove soap.
  • Dry and polish: Pat dry with a soft cloth, then buff with a jewellery polishing cloth.

Avoid harsh cleaners, bleach, or abrasive brushes. With this simple care, your gold-filled jewellery will stay shiny. For more tips on jewellery care, see our How to Clean Gold Jewellery guide.

Gold Filled vs Gold Plated

Gold filled is far more durable than gold plated. In gold-plated jewellery, a very thin layer of gold is electroplated onto another metal (often silver, copper or base metals). Plating might be only fractions of a micron thick, whereas gold filled has a thick bonded layer (at least 5% by weight). This means gold-filled items contain much more actual gold and will withstand wear and scratches far better.

  • Composition: Gold plating is usually electroplated on any metal; gold filled is mechanically bonded to a core (like brass) with heavy gold.
  • Gold value: Plated jewellery has very little gold content; gold filled has a substantial chunk of real gold (5–10 times thicker than plating).
  • Durability: Plated pieces often wear off in months; gold-filled can last decades. The extra gold makes gold filled jewellery resistant to fading and scratching.

In short, gold filled means more gold and longer life than a similar piece that’s merely gold plated. That extra gold costs a bit more, but it means your jewellery stays beautiful much longer.

Gold Filled vs Vermeil

Gold filled is different from vermeil. Vermeil (pronounced “ver-may”) is a term for thick gold plating over sterling silver. In fact, to be called vermeil, U.S. law requires at least 2.5 microns of gold plating on a sterling silver base. Gold filled, by contrast, usually has a base of brass or copper (not silver) and its gold layer is bonded mechanically rather than electroplated.

  • Base metal: Vermeil uses sterling silver under the gold; gold filled typically uses brass or another base metal.
  • Gold thickness: Vermeil plating must be fairly thick (≥2.5 μm) and is 10K or higher gold, but it’s still plating. Gold filled has an even thicker layer by weight (often 5–10 times thicker than normal plating).
  • Durability: Both are decent quality, but gold filled generally endures wear better due to its heavier gold content.

If you see vermeil stamped on jewellery, it means gold over silver. For more on vermeil standards, see our article on What is Gold Vermeil. In comparison, gold filled pieces might not have silver at all, but they do share the advantage of having substantial real gold on top.

Gold Filled Price Per Gram

The price per gram for gold filled jewellery is currently around £4.96 based on the live gold spot price. This price is based solely on the gold content of gold filled items and does not take into account the value of any base metals. Gold filled contains only a small fraction of pure gold, so its price per gram is just a fraction of the spot gold price. A gold-filled item has only 5% gold by weight, plus the value of the base metal. In reality, gold-filled scrap might be valued at just a few pounds per gram, not close to the £99.28 per gram of pure gold.

Keep in mind that actual values fluctuate with the market. (For current prices, check our Live Gold Price page). In short, gold filled is affordable because it uses much less gold – and that’s reflected in its weight-based price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does gold filled mean?

Gold filled means a piece of jewellery has a solid layer of gold bonded to a base metal. It’s essentially a thicker, more durable form of gold plating. By U.S. rules, gold-filled jewellery has at least 5% of its weight in real gold, giving it the appearance of solid gold at a lower price.

What is gold filled jewellery?

Gold filled jewellery refers to any item (necklace, ring, earring, etc.) made with a thick bonded layer of gold on another metal. It looks and wears like gold jewellery because the gold layer is substantial, unlike thinly plated pieces.

Is gold filled real gold?

Yes – the “gold” in gold filled is real gold alloy. The term doesn’t mean fake gold; it simply means only part of the item (typically ≥5% by weight) is solid gold. The rest is another metal. So you’re wearing real gold on the surface, just not through the entire piece.

What is silver filled gold jewellery?

This term is uncommon. It usually refers to jewellery that has a thick gold layer on a silver base – similar to vermeil. Essentially it means gold-plated silver. Silver-filled could imply a silver core with gold coating. It’s less standardised, so check markings: true vermeil has a sterling silver base and thick gold plating.

How long do gold filled rings last?

Gold-filled rings (and other jewellery) are very durable. With regular wear, you can expect 10–30 years of use before the gold layer wears thin. Of course, care and how often it’s worn affect longevity, but it’s far longer-lasting than ordinary plating.

How long does gold filled jewellery last?

Generally, gold-filled jewellery can last many years or even decades under normal wear. The exact lifetime depends on wear and care, but gold-filled items are made to be long-lasting. They often outlive cheaper jewellery like gold-plated pieces because of the thicker gold layer.

Are gold filled earrings hypoallergenic?

Usually yes. The thick outer layer of gold in gold-filled earrings means your skin is in contact with gold rather than a nickel or brass core. Since gold is non-reactive, gold-filled earrings are typically hypoallergenic. They’re a good choice for sensitive ears – just avoid any small areas where the base metal shows.

What does 14k gold filled mean?

“14K gold filled” means the outer gold layer is 14 karat gold. For instance, an item stamped “1/20 14K GF” has 14K gold bonded on it, and that gold layer makes up 1/20th (5%) of the item’s weight. The 14K denotes the purity of the gold layer, and “GF” signifies gold filled.

Is gold filled jewellery worth anything?

Filled gold is currently £4.96 based on the live gold spot price. This does not factor in the value of other base metals present in the item. Gold filled jewellery has some scrap value, but far less than solid gold. The gold layer can be melted/recovered, but at only ~5% of the weight, you’d get “gold” value on that fraction.

When did gold hallmarks start in the UK?

Gold hallmarking in the UK began in medieval times – as early as the 1300s. The practice was formalised with the creation of the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office in London in 1327. By 1478, the Goldsmiths’ Hall in London was officially testing (assaying) and marking gold and silver items. Over the centuries the hallmarking system evolved, leading to the modern form (with numeric fineness marks like 375) we use today, especially after the Hallmarking Act 1973 standardised requirements.

What do gold hallmarks mean?

Gold hallmarks are codes that tell you the purity and authenticity of a gold item. They typically include a number (the purity in parts per thousand) and sometimes additional symbols. For example, a “375” hallmark means the item is 9ct gold (37.5% purity), “750” means 18ct gold (75% purity), and so on. These marks are like the DNA of the piece – they assure buyers and sellers of what the metal actually is. Alongside the purity number, hallmarks may also have an assay office mark and a maker’s mark, which together mean the item has been tested and verified by an official source.
