The live gold price today is £3,086.25 per troy ounce, updating every second on the chart above in real time. This is the international spot price gold trades at globally, and it moves continually throughout the day based on supply and demand.
No one can predict short term movements with certainty, as the price reacts to interest rates, inflation, currency strength and global events. Over the longer term, gold has historically held its value well, which is why many people view it as a safe haven asset.
Gold tends to rise when investors seek security during economic uncertainty, high inflation, or geopolitical tension. Strong central bank buying and sustained safe haven demand have all contributed to gold trading at historically elevated levels.
Gold is priced in US dollars per troy ounce on the global market. The London Bullion Market Association sets a benchmark fix twice daily, which provides a stable reference point that gold buyers and refiners across the world use to value gold.

One kilogram of gold is currently worth £99,225.20, calculated from the live troy ounce price. As a kilo contains 32.15 troy ounces, this unit is most relevant to investors and those holding larger bullion bars.
The 9ct gold price reflects that 9ct is 37.5 percent pure gold, so its per gram value is a proportion of the pure gold price, currently around £37.21 per gram. The chart above shows the live figure as the market moves.
22ct gold is 91.6 percent pure, making it one of the higher purities, and is currently worth around £90.96 per gram. Its value sits close to pure gold because it contains very little alloy.
Each carat reflects how much pure gold an item contains. 9ct is 37.5 percent pure, 18ct is 75 percent pure, and 22ct is 91.6 percent pure, so a higher carat contains more gold and is worth proportionally more per gram than a lower carat.
